The Magnolia Road Internet Co-op
The Magnolia Road Internet Co-op is a non-profit rural community wireless Internet services provider. Their goal is to provide affordable full-time broadband access to areas west of Boulder, Colorado through fixed wireless technology deployed in an environmentally conscious manner. Volunteer labor and donated equipment will be used as much as possible to minimize costs. To aid other rural communities with this vision, MRIC will make design documents available so they can learn from each other. They believe the widespread availability of always-on high-speed connection at conventional dial-up pricing will support telecommuters, create home-based businesses, improve educational opportunities, and enhance the connected home experience.
The Magnolia Road Internet Cooperative (MRIC) is a group of local residents bringing high speed Internet access to areas
west of Boulder, Colorado including Sugarloaf, Magnolia, Coal Creek Canyon, Nederland’s Ridge Road, and Boulder’s Lakeshore neighborhoods. MRIC is a mostly volunteer cooperative, that began as a couple of people who wanted to try and provide high speed Internet Service to the mountain community. In some locations they are currently looking at a 2 to 3 month time frame before they can begin assessing the location to see if service is available there. MRICs mission is to supply low-cost, high-speed Internet access using wireless, always-on technology, called 802.11, to the areas west of Boulder, Colarado.
The advantages of the 802.11 service over satellite, ISDN, and DSL are speed, flexibility, and cost.
